DIY Brown Sugar

Hands in the air: how many of you make or have ever made your own brown sugar?

Me?  Not so much.

I feel a little embarrassed and confused.  How is it that I have never ever made my own brown sugar (or vanilla ~faint~)?!  I mean, I’ve been baking since I was  9-years-old.  I’ve been tinkering with recipes for at least 40 years.  I’ve even made my own cake flour, but never brown sugar.

I feel like such a newbie.

That will be changing soon, just not before this post!  I though maybe all of us who have resisted the idea of making our own could venture into these delicious (or so I’ve heard) waters together.

TOES IN EVERYONE!

Basic Light Brown Sugar Recipe:

Whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 1/2 tablespoons molasses.

BAM!  That’s it.

Basic Dark Brown Sugar Recipe:

Whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar with 1/4 cup molasses.

I read that mixing it by fork, blender or a food processor also works.

I also read that the initial mixing will produce clumps and you will think you’re doing it wrong, but KEEP MIXING!  Soon, you’ll be rewarded with fluffy, yummy, brown sugar.

Now.  Who’s with me?

If you’re brave enough, send me your pics and I’ll post them in the follow-up!

Time for some DIY brown sugar, baby!

I keep meaning to make cookies, so I can try it, but have been swamped. Soon, though. Thanks!

I made it before, but it wasn't until I saw your link on Anyonita Nibbles that I remembered I COULD make it again. Thanks for the reminder (and future savings).

I all ways thought it was raw sugar as it is light brown too. Not only have I not made it, I thought it was a natural thing and I have been cooking and baking for 58 years. Boy is my face red. Thank you for opening this old gals eyes.
