File this under: Things My DIL Has Taught Me.
My DIL has taught me lots of fun things, one of which is that there is someone who can match Boy’s inner/outer geek. Nice!
Lately, with Sweet E’s arrival, Girl is teaching me about cloth diapers (not the cloth diapers from our generation…not even close), specialty bottle nipples for breast-fed babies and the benefits of coconut oil.
Coconut oil is all over the news these days; I’m sure you’ve heard of someone incorporating into their diet because of its extolled health benefits.
Girl is using coconut oil (which actually came in solid form) as a protective balm of sweet E’s tush. I honestly had never heard of this before, but was open to what she had learned and put into action.
On my first week there helping out, I too used the designated container of coconut oil on E’s bum whenever it looked a bit red or appeared irritated. It worked like a charm.
After seeing such a tender area visibly improve, I was hooked.

As it happens, I stumbled upon this GIANT 54 oz. container. I bought it, took half out to take to Girl, and kept the rest.
I’m storing my personal-use coconut oil in a glass container that I keep in the bathroom (I have another container for the kitchen, to cook with):
It’s in a solid state now, but if the temp gets a bit warmer, say with a hot shower, the top of the solid may turn to liquid form. The benefits do not change, whether in solid or liquid form.
So far, I’ve used it as a hand moisturizer, I’ve massaged my face with just a slight swipe of oil and I’ve covered a rug burn on my leg. I have had fantastic results with all but the burny thing. That was served best by a slathering of good old fashioned Vaseline. Oh, my!
I have yet to cook with it, but just today I saw a recipe for stove-top popcorn using coconut oil. NOM! (UPDATE: I use it when I make popcorn and it’s amazing!)
While all the aforementioned benefits are reason enough to try coconut oil, there’s a bonus no one talks about. The biggest secret about this natural product? It leaves you smelling like a tropical umbrelly drink. Best. Side-Effect. Ever.
As if babies didn’t already smell good enough to eat…
Wanna know something crazy. I just bought a jar yesterday. 🙂 Saw a recipe for homemade granola using coconut oil. But now I want to try the popcorn. And the moisturizer!
I now use it daily on my face and I hesitate to say this, but I think I have fewer fine lines. Plus, I use it after I was my hands. I smell like a virtual tropical vacay!
I have recently fallen in love with coconut oil! It works fantastic as a hair mask (cover hair in oil, let sit for 30 minutes, wash out – you might need to wash twice) or as make up remover (massage into face, wipe off with warm face cloth!) I have plans to write my own post about how much I love coconut oil!
Coconut oil for the win! Thanks for sharing your uses.
Yes! I keep hearing how great this stuff is so I just picked some up a couple weeks ago. I’ve been using it on my son’s scalp for dandruff and it works great! Nothing else has worked until I found this!
I love hearing about a new use. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for joining the “OH WHAT A HAPPY DAY” link party today!

Welcome!
Its a great moisturizer, I think I use it more for that than I cook with it! =)
Thank you for spreading JOY and sharing at the Oh What a HAPPY Day party.

Just jumped out of the shower after my run and slathered it on my face, elbows and rough patches! All I need is a small paper umbrelly poking out from behind my ear!
I’m definately getting the jug. So tired of smaller containers because I keep finding new uses for coconut oil. BTW if you mix it with sunflower seed oil, it will soak in your skin quickly.
I decided today that I’ll need another giant container!
So does it smell yummy like coconuts? Do you walk around all day wanting a Pina Colada?! Thanks for the tips!
It smells divine. It’s a light smell that isn’t overpowering. But, I’m always up for a Pina Colada, so I might not be the best judge!
Coconut oil is great at relieving itchy pregnant belly too! From personal experience!!
Husband used it on his sunburn this week and swore it helped. So many uses!
I love mixing coconut oil with baking soda to make a paste. I then use it as a scrub on my face. You just have to be careful not to leave it on to long, because the baking soda with burn your skin. Also, you need to rinse your face with cold water. I swear it has really helped with my black heads. As gross as that might sounds.
Burn my face?! Yikes! I’m glad it helped, but you’re scaring me a lttle!
Yay, I just bought some, so this gives me some ideas!
Yes! I still haven’t cooked with it. Maybe this weekend.
Thanks for the tips. Have a great weekend. Linda
After you do the vinegar tip, use some of this. You’ll smell like a tropical dream!
We love coconut oil, we use on our skin, cooking and baking. It is wonderful and so many uses. One of my favorites is to do a honey face mask and then put coconut oil all over my face afterwards. I also love to make my own lotion with it. Thank you for sharing.
Every day I’m discovering more uses for it. It’s amazing what you can do with coconut oil.
I’ve wanted to buy some for cooking…now I see I need it for other things as well. So happy I read this.
Yay! Welcome to the coconut oil club!
I’ve just started cooking with coconut oil. Will try is as a lotion too. Thanks! ‘-)
I just tried it tonight with popcorn…I’m sold.
Hand moisturizer sounds quite nice and for a baby’s bum awesome!
I was surprised how well it worked for Sweet E’s bum. And smells so sweet, too!
I didn’t know coconut oil could be used for diaper rash! Thanks for linking this up to Frugal Crafty Home!
Well, I’m not sure about full blown diaper rash, but I have seen it work on the beginnings of one.
This is my favorite oil to use for almost everything! Even for popcorn 😉 I definitely recommend cooking with it! I fry eggs that way, or grill veggies, it takes the place of butter in my pan when I cook 99% of the time. 🙂
I am a butter-lover, so I’ve hesitated to cook with it, but…we used it for popcorn this weekend and loved it. Gonna need a new bucket o’oil!
Visiting from Pin It Monday and pinned your post. Have a great week!
Thanky, ma’am!
I have this same coconut oil and I love it! I cook with it all the time – and it is really good on popcorn 🙂
I need to saute some veggie in it, but haven’t. Love it as a face moisturizer and and popcorn, though!
wow, I have never seen coconut oil in a solid before… I’m intrigued :o) thanks for linking up to Tasteful Tuesdays at Nap-Time Creations… Winners for the giveaway will be announced Wed… Have you entered?

I had never seen it in liquid form, so it threw me when I did. In either form, it’s amazing.
Would you believe I am sensitive to coconut oil? Its soooo wrong! But I do use it instead of soap for my face. I melt the oil, add a bunch of salt or sugar to make a scrub and this is all I use. My face never, ever feels greasy (or dry) any more. I’ve also seen that you can use it as a sun screen. I hate, hate, hate bottled sunscreen so this is what I (happily!) use now.
I am sensitive to so many things, but thankfully no reaction yet. Sun screen? I’ll have to check that out. I haven’t heard that one.
Hi! Visiting from “The Sheltering Tree” link-up. It is quite amazing what all these natural products can do! God did put them here for a reason. I’ve heard great things about coconut oil, but have yet to use it. I guess this is my sign to go out and purchase some, huh? 🙂 Thanks for sharing…have a lovely evening!
Michell @Prowess and Pearls
It is super great for HAIR Deep Conditioning
I recently started supplementing both my cat and dog’s diet with coconut oil – they both love it, they eat it straight up!!
Thanks for sharing, stopping by from Nap Time Creations!!
Oooo, why? I’m now on the hunt for new things to do with coconut oil.
Brilliant tip – need to try this out!
Thanks so much for sharing at The Friday Baby Shower, Alice x
Happy to!
