DIY Brown Sugar
Hands in the air: how many of you make or have ever made your own brown sugar?
Me? Not so much.
I feel a little embarrassed and confused. How is it that I have never ever made my own brown sugar (or vanilla ~faint~)?! I mean, I've been baking since I was 9-years-old. I've been tinkering with recipes for at least 40 years. I've even made my own cake flour, but never brown sugar.
I feel like such a newbie.
That will be changing soon, just not before this post! I though maybe all of us who have resisted the idea of making our own could venture into these delicious (or so I've heard) waters together.
TOES IN EVERYONE!
Basic Light Brown Sugar Recipe:
Whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 ½ tablespoons molasses.
BAM! That's it.
Basic Dark Brown Sugar Recipe:
Whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar with ¼ cup molasses.
I read that mixing it by fork, blender or a food processor also works.
I also read that the initial mixing will produce clumps and you will think you're doing it wrong, but KEEP MIXING! Soon, you'll be rewarded with fluffy, yummy, brown sugar.
Now. Who's with me?
If you're brave enough, send me your pics and I'll post them in the follow-up!
Time for some DIY brown sugar, baby!

I have never made my own brown sugar. There is a first time for everything...Sounds super easy.
That it's so easy is the main reason I'm astonished that I've never done it before. Are you gonna try it?
This is fab. Again, you are freaking awesome as crap and I simply adore you! I'm showing my age huh? I'm not too young though...
LOL! BEST COMMENT OF THE DAY! ~here's your ribbon~ Seriously, I gotta make me some of this, and if I end up eating it with a spoon, well, that will be a whole 'nutha post.
I will have to try this. You should try vanilla extract....it takes about 6 months+ to fully develop, but it tastes so good and you will never buy off the sheft again (plus, you are eliminating a bunch of unnatural ingredients).
If I start making it now it will be ready right around Sweet E's first birthday!
I have also been baking since I was 9, BUT my pantries were not always so well stocked and the nearest supermarket was 20 or more miles away. So I did know how to make brown sugar, how to substitute for eggs (baking soda believe it or not) and all sorts of other tricks. Applesauce can be used instead of oil, cocoa and oil can be used instead of baking chocolate. Be warned though, not too many substitutions in one recipe makes for a not so tasty recipe...
Look at you! You might have to be my info go-to gal! Glad to know someone has tried the method and it works.
This reminds me of the first time I saw Martha Stewart making her own marshmallows. Here I always thought marshmallows, brown sugar and cake flour were ingredients that you buy to make other things and never thought about what goes into making them! Eyes opened!!
I totally forgot about marshmallows! But, yeah, make 'em!
I didn't even know you COULD make brown sugar. Love learning new ideas and am eager to try this one.
I had no idea either! I'm making cookies next week and I'll try it out and let y'all know how it goes.
I had no idea you could make your own brown sugar! Good to know! Thanks for linking up to Monday Funday!
Now you know! (I had no idea either)
I all ways thought it was raw sugar as it is light brown too. Not only have I not made it, I thought it was a natural thing and I have been cooking and baking for 58 years. Boy is my face red. Thank you for opening this old gals eyes.
I don't know that I'll ever buy brown sugar again. Glad to help!
Don't feel like s newbie because I didn't even know you could make your own brown sugar! That's so cool! Thanks so much for linking up to Frugal Crafty Home! I hope we'll see you back next week!
Let me know if you try it. I haven't yet, but intend to.
I made it before, but it wasn't until I saw your link on Anyonita Nibbles that I remembered I COULD make it again. Thanks for the reminder (and future savings).
Love it! Thanks for coming by.
