Spritz Cookies
The German gave me her cookie press when I got married and it's on its last leg. That wonderful workhorse has lasted through at least 40 Christmases.

It's a vintage aluminum tube with a screw-on top. You crank the handle and it pushes the dough through the tube to get the desired length and form for your cookies. I don't know what I'm going to do when it finally gives way...maybe start hunting through antique shops for one.

I have a newer Wilton cookie press, but it's just not my old one. A baker wants what she wants, no?
Nevertheless, old or new cookie press, one of our favorite family favs is the Spritz cookie.
Who doesn't love a good butter cookie?
When I bake these during the holidays, I always make more than intended, so I can stash some in the freezer until after the Christmas/New Year's rush has passed. Then I wait for a particularly cold and miserable day, make some hot chocolate and grab a few cookies from the freezer. Talk about making all right with the world again. So much YES!
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 ¼ cups of flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
Instructions
- Heat over to 400°.
- Mix butter and salt.
- Mix in remaining ingredients.
- Place dough in cookie press; form desired shapes on ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake until set but not brown, 6 to 9 minutes.
- Immediately remove from cookie sheet.
Notes
* Chocolate Spritz: Stir in 2 ounces melted unsweetened chocolate (cool) into butter mixture.
With the holidays so far ahead of us, I figured this may be the time to start seriously looking for a new vintage press.
Cause come on, we gotta have these cookies.

Ooh, I love spritz cookies! I had a press for a while, a Pampered Chef version I think, but I never really liked it. It wasn't quite sturdy enough. But the cookies are so delicious!
The new presses can't compete with the old. Makes me sad.
Oh my goodness! Spritz cookies are seriously the best! My family was stationed in Germany when I was a kid, and my mom discovered spritz cookies there. She makes them every year for Christmas and we just gobble them up (although we usually end up making like 10 batches because they are SO good!). That authentic press looks pretty amazing! I would start searching for a new one now so that you can be ready to go with one you love when the older press makes it's last cookie.
They are hand's down the fav cookie in this house. So buttery. SO addictive. Gotta find me a press.
Also...tweeted your giveaway!
Thank you for linking up at Meal Planning Monday Recipe Link-Up last week! I love spritz cookies, my grandma always used to make them, and I make them at Christmas every year as well. I think I may have to get out my cookie press and make some from St. Patrick's Day. 🙂 I hope you stop by my linky party again this week. aprilshomemaking.com/2014/03/meal-planning-monday-recipe-link-up-2.html
Green spritz! Perfect.
My Aunt used to make these so they always remind me of her. Sprinkled with colored sprinkles at Christmas time, pink and green at Easter. I've never known her to make the chocolate version, however. Yum!
Ah, the sprinkles! You should try the chocolate. So good!
Ahh!! Love these cookies!!!
YEEEEEEESSS!
I know that what I am about to say might make you itchy, but I see these at garage sales all the time...maybe not in that snazzy colour, but all the time...perhaps if I find one this year I will have a give away of my own 🙂
You're right, it does make me itchy, but I could bleach it, right?! ALL THE TIME?! (please don't make me go to a garage sale!)
Great recipe! These cookies remind me of my childhood overseas 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome!
I have never heard of Spritz cookies but I'm sure I've tasted some that look like these before. They look like fun to make (and eat!).
OMGosh, I will have to remedy your Spritz cookie deficit.
Oh yum. I have a soft spot for cookies like this! Adding them to my list. 🙂
You and me both, sister!
OMG I have that same cookie press - the aluminum one!!! And it's been in the pantry for ages and we've never used it. I think I may have to try your recipe with it!! Pinning so I'll have it handy next time I get the urge for some cookies!
Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Wait. You have the cookie press...but...you've...never used it?! WOMAN! Get to baking. You can thank me after you come out of your Spritz cookie come.
