...Then It Dawned On Me

You guys know I love me a restaurant supply store for my kitchen supplies, right?  I also love finding offbeat uses for stuff I find there.  FUN!

I also am a frequent shopper at Costco and Sam's.  Shopping at these establishments has saved us untold green backs over the years, but has also presented interesting storage dilemmas.  Buying in bulk means oversized packaging.

Recently my two loves collided.

Costco had a sale on Dawn liquid dishwashing soap.  Green Apple is my absolute fav.  Of course, the bottle is ginormous and nobody wants to keep picking up and putting down that monstrosity.

What to do?  What to do?

I searched through my kitchen paraphernalia in hopes of finding a lightweight, yet functional alternative to the wrist-busting bottle.

Luckily for me, I had recently been to the restaurant supply store.

I filled a clear squeeze bottle with Dawn and BAMMO! problem solved.

...Then It Dawned On Me

Truthfully, this was simply meant as a temporary fix until I could find something a bit more suitable, but as we used the squeeze bottle we found that we. loved. the. squeeze. bottle.

It was incredibly lightweight, the tiny opening allowed us to easily regulate how much soap we were using (Dawn in concentrated, so a dab will do ya) and it was FUN!

Here's the size difference:

Big difference.

Two things I learned from this pic.

#1) I need to clean that spot off the tile (I think it's spaghetti sauce) behind the Dawn.

#2) It may be a few years before I have to replace my dishwashing liquid, because we've been using that squeeze bottle for about three weeks and that's all we've managed to use, plus there's another ginormous bottle under the sink.

Two huge bottles?!  It was a good sale.

Back to the squeezebottles: wanna know just how amazing they are?

I switched my face cleansing concoction to one and put it in the shower.

Pretty!

The small opening is perfect for both applications and allows negligible evaporation.  There are caps available for these bottles, but I find them tedious.

NO CAPS FOR ME!

  1. Yep those same thoughts go through my head with some of the products I buy at Costco...There are just some I can't justify, cause I may have them for YEARS! 😉 I love this idea and would totally use it for lots of things.

    1. This method, while I thought temporary, is working so well we're keeping it. The giant container is under the sink. Will take forever to use all of it, but I keep thinking about all that green I'm saving!

  2. Great idea! I bought a ginormous container of laundry detergent that breaks my arm every time I pick it up. Need to get a bottle like yours (or something similar) for that, too.

    1. OMGosh, I have a giant container of laundry liquid too. I ended saving a smaller container from the same brand and I simply refill that one from the giant one. Although, it'd be a great way to add resistance training to our days!

    2. We have the large size with the spigot on a shelf over the washer. No picking up at all - just use the spigot to fill the measuring cap and into the washer.

  3. Popping over from What to Do Weekends link party. What a great solution to a problem that many of us have that shop at the big box stores. Thanks for sharing!

  4. What a great idea! So simple yet effective! I would love if you linked this up to Totally Terrific Tuesday! Thanks for sharing.

  5. i have used those bottles for my dawn soap for years. also keep one beside it with clorax to disinfect my dishes, cutting boards and counter tops and sink. works great.

    1. BRILLIANT! I love my readers. That's such a great idea, I'm gonna start using one for my bleach...cap on this one!

    2. I do the same and have for years. One thought though. When you have a chance; keep the tops and discard the bottoms of other bottles; because I have found the bleach seems to destroy the caps. I put them in the dishwasher to clean and store in the junk drawer until needed. I to through 1-2 a year.

  6. Duhhhhhh, why didn't I think of that? t would love for you to share this brilliant post at our WIW party. Hope you can join us!

  7. I do the same and found even larger bottles at Gordon Foods. I put mine in a touchless dispenser. But before I got that I used old wine bottles with a pour spout on top. That work nicely and holds more. I do like the idea that this is plastic though.

    1. A wine bottle with a spout sound lovely to look at and use, although I am a klutz and I sense danger...DANGER!

  8. Patti, I kid you not --- just recently I was thinking I needed to find some squeeze bottles. I can't even remember what it was that I was going to put in it. I think it was cooking oil. I would love to buy the really big jugs of it but they are too big to be manageable for me in the kitchen. I love your uses for them and so did our blog hop friends. Your post was one of the most viewed and will be featured this week. Congrats! Pinning this to my "tips" board right now. 🙂

    1. Lol! Those bottles are fabulous! The one in my kitchen makes me happy every time I use it. So green! So light! So easy to regulate! Thanks for the feature and pin, Sinea!
